1. Client Background and Key Challenges: Illuminating More Than Just Billboards
This project is located along a section of the Carretera General, a major thoroughfare in southern Tenerife that serves as a vital link between several popular tourist attractions and residential areas. The client’s requirement was clear: to provide reliable nighttime illumination for two key roadside billboards.
Complexity of the Advertising Content
The billboards featured more than simple text—they included high-definition images of steaks, detailed address information, prominent phone numbers, and highly attractive pricing. This required lighting equipment that could deliver not only high brightness but also a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) to accurately reproduce colors and ensure text clarity.
Conventional sodium lamps or low-quality LEDs would cause color distortion, making the steak appear dull and unappealing, thereby undermining the advertising effect.
Harsh Outdoor Environment
Tenerife has a typical Mediterranean climate, with intense sunlight in summer and ground temperatures exceeding 50°C. As an island, it also faces high humidity, salt fog corrosion, and occasional strong winds. These conditions place strict demands on luminaire durability, IP ratings, and especially the high-temperature resistance of lithium-ion batteries.
“All-Night High-Brightness” Requirement
The value of a billboard depends on its nighttime visibility. The client required the lighting system to maintain stable, high brightness from sunset to sunrise without dimming or shutting down due to low battery levels, ensuring maximum advertising effectiveness.
2. In-Depth Analysis: Why Choose the Sottlot SWL-40Pro?
To address these challenges, we selected and deployed the Sottlot Uranus Series SWL-40Pro solar floodlight. This solution goes beyond basic illumination—it integrates advanced lighting technology with intelligent control systems.
2.1 Performance Advantage: The Impact of 6,000 LM
Based on the billboard dimensions (approximately 3 m × 4 m) and installation height, achieving uniform illumination required a single luminaire output exceeding 5,000 lm. The SWL-40Pro, with up to 6,000 lm output (equivalent to a 600W incandescent bulb), fully meets this requirement.
True-to-Life Color Rendering:
A color temperature of 5,700K (cool white) was selected. This highly penetrating light vividly highlights the texture, color, and sheen of the “1 kg beef short ribs,” making them appear as realistic as in daylight. At the same time, it enhances text contrast, allowing drivers to quickly capture key information even at high speeds.
Uniform Lighting Through Array Layout:
To ensure full coverage, four SWL-40Pro units were installed vertically and evenly spaced at the top of each billboard. This configuration eliminates uneven lighting issues such as hotspots or dark edges.
2.2 Core Technologies: A “Double Safety Net” for Island Conditions
ALS 2.0 (Adaptive Lighting System):
A patented technology from Sottlot, ALS 2.0 dynamically adjusts output based on ambient light and battery levels. Even during extended cloudy or rainy periods, it ensures continuous illumination through intelligent power allocation. Combined with high-efficiency solar panels, the system can sustain stable lighting for up to 10 consecutive rainy days.
TCS (Temperature Control System):
The SWL-40Pro is equipped with an intelligent temperature management system that monitors battery conditions in real time. In high-temperature environments, it automatically adjusts charging and discharging processes to prevent overheating. This extends battery lifespan to over five years and significantly reduces maintenance costs.
2.3 Installation Advantages: Fast Deployment and Clean Design
Off-Grid Installation:
The system requires no connection to the municipal power grid. Installation involves mounting a custom L-shaped bracket and securing the luminaires, completing the process within half a day—over 80% faster than traditional wired systems.
Minimalist Industrial Design:
The Sottlot Uranus Series features a one-piece die-cast aluminum housing with corrosion-resistant coating. Its clean, modern design blends seamlessly into outdoor environments without visual disruption.
3. Implementation and Visual Impact
Daytime Appearance
Mounted on top of the billboard, the SWL-40Pro integrates cleanly with the structure. Against Tenerife’s blue skies and natural landscape, it appears as a refined industrial element rather than an intrusive fixture.
Nighttime Transformation
At sunset, the SWL-40Pro automatically activates. The billboard instantly becomes a bright focal point, with content appearing vivid and highly visible. Even under cloudy conditions, brightness remains stable, demonstrating the effectiveness of ALS 2.0 technology.
4. Results and Client Feedback
One month after installation, the client reported strong results:
Increased Brand Exposure
The billboard achieved true 24/7 visibility. Nighttime drivers are naturally drawn to the illuminated display, increasing engagement and recall rates compared to daytime exposure.
Economic Benefits
-
Cost Savings: Eliminated approximately 200 meters of cabling (€3,000–€5,000) and associated approval processes
-
Zero Electricity Costs: Saves over €300 annually compared to traditional 600W lighting systems
-
Fast ROI: The initial investment is expected to be recovered within 6–12 months
After this period, the system delivers ongoing value with virtually zero operating costs.
5. Conclusion and Recommendations
The success of the Tenerife project demonstrates that solar lighting is no longer just an environmentally friendly option—it is a strategic solution for cost reduction, efficiency improvement, and maximizing commercial value in outdoor advertising.
The Sottlot Uranus Series SWL-40Pro, with its 6,000 lm ultra-high brightness, intelligent ALS 2.0 system, and advanced TCS temperature control, effectively solves the challenges of high-performance off-grid lighting.
It does more than illuminate a billboard—it unlocks new business opportunities and sustainable profitability.
